The Northern Piedmont Center at Orange, VA was founded in 1940 as a unit of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech. The NPAREC has a total of 45 acres that support crop production and environmental science research for the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences and our research partners. More than 20 acres are currently in research plots planted to corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, switchgrass, and other crops. The NPAREC is located on Highway 15, south of the Town of Orange.

The farm is at 38° 13' 26.10" N, 78° 07' 13.08"W, the elevation is 510 feet (156 m) above sea level, and the average annual rainfall is 41.8 in (1060 mm). The average dates of last and first frosts are April 18 and October 18, respectively. The predominant soils are Davidson clay (Fine-kaolinitic thermic Rhodic Kandiudults ), Starr silt loam (Fine-loamy, mixed, semiactive thermic Fluventic Dystrudepts ) and Dyke loam (Fine-mixed, semiactive, mesic Typic Rhodudults), typical of soils of the northern Virginia Piedmont.
